Recently DAG has caught-wind of reports of a new version of the malicious software “Antivirus XP”. The results of this malware bear a quite new and disturbing payload. This malware is classified as a “Trojan Horse” (i.e. it tricks the user into giving permission for it to install itself). Once installed, it is believed that most anti-virus software is ineffective at blocking this Trojan Horse at this time.
Warning Signs:
Reports state that, like all the other version of Antivirus XP (2008, 2009, 360), FileFix Pro 2009 appears as a pop-up window or as a message balloon in your Windows system tray. It warns you that your files are corrupted and you’ll need to install File Fix to repair them (re: image below)…
…This is not true! DO NOT BECOME A VICTIM! If you see this pop-up; contact DAG IMMEDIATLY [call us Toll-Free at 888-566-8118 - which offers an emergency option that will track an enginer ASAP]
How Virus Works:
Once you clicks “OK” and accept the program, it is installed. Thus, maliciously encrypting your files. FileFix then claims that in order to “fix” the files it has corrupted, you must pay to upgrade to the full version of FileFix Professional. This is a trap. In all honestly, it is most likely that your files are okay, intact and safe, however at this point they have been encrypted by the malware they instantly become inaccessible unless a fee is paid to by you to un-encrypt them. This is illegal, horrible, and at its core blackmail pure and simple. If this happens to you, please contact DAG immediately for assistance.
General Info/Warning:
This software will only install if you accept it by clicking “ok”, “install”, etc. In essence, if a window pops up with this warning (or any other virus warning), DAG’s best recommendation is to close your web browser immediately. The software won’t install without your help. Always, be very careful when browsing the web, also. If you get a pop-up warning you about a virus or problems with your computer, be wary. When in doubt, contact DAG, we are here for you.
