Cybersecurity Strategy & Roadmap

A cybersecurity strategy is a plan that sets where your security program needs to be and the order in which you will get there. DAG Tech's virtual CISO compares your current state to a target state, ranks the gaps by risk and business impact, and delivers a 12 to 24 month roadmap with owners, hours and budget.

The Short Answer

What Is a Cybersecurity Strategy?

A cybersecurity strategy is a documented plan that ties security investment to business goals by defining a target state, the gaps between it and today, and a sequenced roadmap to close them. Without a strategy, security spending follows the last incident, the last audit finding or the last vendor pitch. A strategy replaces that with a ranked list: what matters most to the business, which risks threaten it, which initiatives reduce those risks the most per hour and dollar, and what depends on what. A good roadmap also shows leadership what they are choosing not to do yet, so risk acceptance is a decision rather than an accident.

DAG Tech's virtual CISO builds the strategy from the CxO initiation findings, any recent cybersecurity risk assessment and your obligations. Maturity is scored against a framework such as NIST CSF 2.0, so progress can be measured year over year. Each roadmap initiative is assigned an owner: your in-house team, a provider you already use, or DAG Tech services when they are the best fit. The vCISO can then track the roadmap on Clarity IT™ reserved hours and report progress to leadership.

Scope

What We Evaluate

The strategy starts with the business and ends with a plan your team and providers can execute.

01

Business Context

Identify the systems, data, revenue streams and operations whose loss would hurt the most.

02

Threat and Risk Profile

Review the threats most likely to affect your industry and size, and the risks already identified in assessments.

03

Obligations

List regulatory, contract and cyber insurance requirements that set a minimum bar.

04

Current Maturity

Score today's program against NIST CSF 2.0 functions: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover.

05

Target State

Set realistic target maturity for each area based on risk, obligations and appetite.

06

Tool and Spend Review

Map current security tools and contracts to needs, and flag overlap and gaps.

07

Initiative Prioritization

Rank initiatives by risk reduction, effort, cost and dependencies.

08

Resourcing

Recommend who should own each initiative: in-house staff, an existing provider or a new one.

When to Start

Signs You Need a Cybersecurity Strategy

  • Security spending is driven by the last incident or vendor pitch.
  • Leadership asks what security will cost next year and nobody has an answer.
  • You have a list of audit findings but no order to fix them in.
  • You cannot show the board how security supports business goals.
  • Several security projects compete for the same people and budget.
  • Your security plan has not changed since your business did.

FAQ

Cybersecurity Strategy & Roadmap Questions

What is a cybersecurity strategy?

It is a documented plan that defines where your security program needs to be, measures the gap from today, and lays out a prioritized roadmap with owners, budget and timeline to close it.

Do we need a risk assessment first?

It helps. A recent cybersecurity risk assessment gives the strategy hard findings to work from. If you do not have one, the vCISO can scope a lighter review into the strategy work or recommend a full assessment first.

How long does a cybersecurity roadmap cover?

Most roadmaps cover 12 to 24 months, with the first 90 days broken out in detail and later quarters reviewed and adjusted as the business and threats change.

How much does a cybersecurity strategy cost?

It is scoped in hours at the CxO rate based on your size, complexity and how much assessment data already exists. The proposal shows the total before work starts.

Will the roadmap only recommend DAG Tech services?

No. Each initiative is assigned to the best owner: your team, a provider you already use, another third party or DAG Tech. The strategy is vendor-neutral.
