Virtual CISO (vCISO) Services
STRATEGY · RISK · POLICY · INCIDENT READINESS · BOARD REPORTING
vCISO services give your organization a part-time, senior security executive who owns the cybersecurity program without a full-time hire. DAG Tech's virtual CISO sets strategy, writes policy, runs risk and compliance, reports to leadership and the board, and directs whoever does the hands-on work: your team, your MSSP or DAG Tech.

The Short Answer
What Is a Virtual CISO (vCISO)?
A vCISO, or virtual CISO, is an experienced chief information security officer who works for your organization part-time, as a service, and is accountable for your security program the way a full-time CISO would be. The terms virtual CISO, fractional CISO and CISO as a service describe the same role. The difference from a consultant is ownership. A consultant delivers a report and leaves. A vCISO keeps the risk register current, decides what gets fixed first, signs off on policy, answers the board's questions and stays on the hook when an auditor, insurer or customer asks how you protect their data. The difference from a managed security provider is altitude. An MSSP or SOC watches alerts and responds to threats. A vCISO decides what the program should look like, which controls matter, how much to spend and how to show it is working.
At DAG Tech, the vCISO is one of four roles in the CxO™ program. Every engagement starts with a one-time CxO initiation: the vCISO learns your business, reviews your current controls, contracts and obligations, and produces a prioritized view of security risk. From there the vCISO recommends what to do next and who should do it. That may be your in-house team, another provider you already trust, or DAG Tech services such as managed cybersecurity or X-SOC™ 24/7 SOC monitoring when that is the best fit. The advice stays vendor-neutral either way. Ongoing vCISO work runs on Clarity IT™ reserved monthly hours, so the role scales up during an audit, a transaction or an incident and back down when the program is steady.

The Role
What a vCISO Does
The vCISO owns the decisions a security executive owns, and makes sure someone owns the work behind each one.
Cybersecurity Requirements Analysis
Maps every obligation that applies to you, from regulations and frameworks to customer contracts, cyber insurance terms and vendor agreements, into one list of required controls with an owner for each.
Risk Management and Risk Register
Runs a risk process aligned to NIST CSF 2.0 or ISO 27001, keeps a scored risk register, and records which risks leadership accepts, transfers or fixes.
Security Strategy and Roadmap
Turns risk and requirements into a sequenced 12 to 24 month roadmap with costs in hours and budget, owners and milestones.
Policy and Standards
Writes, approves and maintains the written information security program, from access control and data handling to incident response and vendor risk.
Board and Executive Reporting
Briefs leadership and the board in business terms: top risks, program progress, incidents, spend and the decisions they need to make.
Incident Readiness and Response Leadership
Owns the incident response plan, runs tabletop exercises, and during an incident coordinates your SOC, counsel, insurer and forensics firm.
Third-Party and Vendor Risk
Sets the vendor review process, reviews critical providers, and answers the security questionnaires your own customers send you.
Security Operations Oversight
Sets the requirements and metrics for monitoring and response, whether that is X-SOC™, another MSSP or an in-house team, and holds them to it.

When to Start
Signs You Need a Virtual CISO
- Customers, auditors or insurers ask security questions and nobody owns the answers.
- Your board wants a security briefing and IT can only describe tools.
- You must name a CISO or qualified individual under a regulation or contract.
- Security spend keeps growing but nobody can say which risks it reduced.
- Your policies are templates that do not match how you actually work.
- You have an MSSP or SOC, but no one sets its priorities or reviews its results.

FAQ
Virtual CISO (vCISO) Questions, Answered
What are vCISO services?
vCISO services provide a senior security executive who works for you part-time and owns your cybersecurity program: requirements, risk, strategy, policy, incident readiness, vendor risk and board reporting. The vCISO decides what needs to happen and directs whoever does the work.
Is a fractional CISO the same as a virtual CISO?
Yes. Virtual CISO, vCISO, fractional CISO and CISO as a service all describe a part-time security executive. Some providers use "fractional" for more on-site time, but the role and accountability are the same.
How much do vCISO services cost?
Every deliverable is scoped in hours at the CxO rate, and the proposal shows the total before any work starts. Engagements begin with a one-time CxO initiation, then ongoing vCISO work runs on Clarity IT™ reserved monthly hours sized to your risk and obligations. Every proposal is custom-scoped.
Do we still need a vCISO if we have an MSSP or a SOC?
Usually, yes. A SOC watches for and responds to threats. A vCISO decides what the program should cover, sets the SOC's requirements, reviews its results and reports to leadership. Our vCISO works with X-SOC™ 24/7 SOC when monitoring is needed, and works just as well with another MSSP or your in-house team.
Can a vCISO fill a regulatory requirement to name a CISO?
Often, but the rules differ by regulation, and your organization keeps responsibility for overseeing the role. Confirm your situation with counsel.
What does a vCISO deliver in the first 90 days?
Typically a cybersecurity requirements matrix, a scored risk register, a list of quick wins, a prioritized roadmap and a first executive or board briefing. Policy work and tabletop exercises follow on the roadmap.
Does the vCISO handle security incidents?
The vCISO leads the response: activates the incident response plan, coordinates your SOC, IT team, legal counsel, insurer and any forensics firm, and keeps leadership informed. Hands-on containment and forensics come from your SOC or a specialist firm.
Will the vCISO push us to buy DAG Tech services?
No. The vCISO recommends the right owner for each roadmap item: your team, a provider you already use, or DAG Tech when it is the best fit. You decide.
